Bold juicy red and black fruits, with hints of smoke and earth. The roundness of Merlot and Syrah are complimented by the structure provided by the Sangiovese. This wine displays a beautiful harmony between bright acidity and defined, silky tannins. An iconic 'Super Tuscan' blend.
In 1996 Gaja acquired several plots of land in Bolgheri, for a total of 120 hectares. Vineyards are located at five km from the coast, so they enjoy the cooling influence of the sea-breeze and the light - reflection from the sea makes this one of the most luminous winegrowing areas in Italy. Here soils span from the sandy soils closer to the coast, to limestone soils closer to the hills inland. The grapes for Promis come from darker soils, rich in clay and limestone, near the town of Bibbona. The vines were all planted in 1996.
The 2019 season began with a cold and dry winter. Stormy showers characterised the spring months, which compensated for the lack of rain over the winter. Summer was hot and dry, apart from one day toward the end of July, when a total of 80mm of rain fell in 24 hours. The vines benefited greatly from this rainfall, which contributed toward a slower and more balanced ripening. In September, winds helped to keep the grapes healthy, and harvest began in early September with the whites, and the reds on 15th September.
The grapes were handled with particular care and with an extremely soft pressing of the bunches, helping to shorten the maceration process. The three varieties ferment and macerate separately for around 15 days. After 12 months in oak, they are blended and then aged for several months in the bottle before release.
