Mate's vineyard Chardonnay is Kumeu River's flagship wine. It is the original vineyard which Maté Brajkovich purchased back in 1944. However, it wasn't until 1993 when the first grapes were harvested from this vineyard, the year following Maté's death. Since then, the family have made this wine their premium label.
An exceptionally concentrated and rich wine, with the perfect balance of freshness, fruit and minerals. The Mate’s Vineyard is usually the most reserved and unyielding when young with the nose being closed, just giving hints of peach and mineral notes that we expect from Mate’s Vineyard. This will be a very long lived wine.
Another exceptional vintage from the rightly world renown Kumeu River, the single vineyard Mate's continues to be one of the very best in class of New Zealand Chardonnay.
"Pale straw. The richest of the line-up. But still very transparent and lively. Chewy finish. A wine in line with late 20th-century ideal of Chardonnay while Hunting Hill is closer to what is sought in the early 21st century. 13%. Drink 2026 - 2036."
