Marqués de Riscal is one of the oldest and most well-known Rioja producers. The vineyard was founded by D. Guillermo Hurtado de Amézaga in 1858 and has been producing high quality wines ever since.
Born in 1720 in the Basque region of Spain he began his career as a wine merchant. In 1744, he purchased the Marqués de Riscal estate and began to produce wine there. Hurtado de Amézaga was a innovative winemaker and was one of the first to use French oak barrels for aging his wines. He also experimented with different grape varieties and blends, which helped to create the unique style of Marques De Riscal wines. The winery became well-known under Hurtado de Amézaga's ownership, and he was awarded the title of Marqués in 1789. He died in 1798, but his legacy continues on at Marques De Riscal, which is now one of the most respected wineries in Spain.
Marqués de Riscal is a 100% organic wine producer. The vineyards have been cultivated using only organic methods for over 20 years, making it one of the pioneers of organic viticulture in Spain.
