This vineyard was first planted in 1982 and became a significant part of the original Kumeu River Chardonnay blend. Occupying the slope overlooking Maté’s Vineyard, it has always contributed lovely ripe and rich fruit to the Estate Chardonnay. Hunting Hill was replanted in 2000 and is now even better than before, giving beautifully ripe fruit with a distinctive, mealy minerality.
Hand harvested Whole-bunch pressed Indigenous yeast fermentation 100% barrel fermentation 100% malolactic fermentation 11 months maturation in barrel.
The remarkable streak of exceptional vintages that began in 2019 has been upheld by the 2022 harvest. The harvesting conditions were outstanding, contributing to the creation of a quintessential Hunting Hill vintage. This wine is a testament to its unique terroir, showcasing an intense lemon and lime zest aroma complemented by delicate floral notes. On the palate, it offers a rich and robust experience, which transitions into a lasting impression of acidity and stony qualities. This vintage stands as a prime illustration of the Chardonnay varietal's potential: a wine of both power and finesse, intricately layered, and poised for graceful aging.
