This is one of the all time greatest estates of Germany. It was
established just before the First World War in 1911 by Sebastian Prüm.
His great granddaughter, Katharina, now runs the estate, although
her father Manfred is still very much on the scene. Based on the river
bank of the Middle Mosel opposite the mighty and imposing vineyard
of Sonnenuhr that dominates the landscape, Prüm have been
producing definitive, long lasting Rieslings for decades. They have
four main vineyards (as well as some less well known sites), although
it is the Sonnenuhrin Wehlenfor which they
are best known. Their othertop plots are bits of the Sonnenuhrin
Zeltingen, Badstubein Bernkasteland Himmelreichin Graach. There
are a lot of old vines at Prüm, and harvests tend to be quite late.
Vinification is fairly traditional here and the wines are not rushed.

Winemaker's Highlights

The 2020 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese showcases meticulous
craftsmanship at every stage. The grapes are hand-picked over
multiple passes through the vineyard, selecting only botrytis-kissed
berries at peak ripeness. Fermentation unfolds naturally with
indigenous yeasts in traditional 1,000-liter Fuder casks, a method
Joh. Jos. Prüm has upheld for more than a century. In the estate’s
naturally cool cellars, this slow, steady fermentation can last for
months, safeguarding the Mosel Riesling’s delicate aromatics. The
wine rests on fine lees in neutral oak, developing its hallmark
petrol nuances and intricate mineral depth. With residual sugar
perfectly counterpoised by the 2020 vintage’s vibrant acidity, this
Auslese attains the airy balance that defines truly great Mosel
wines.
