Vineyard: Ramos Pinto
Origin: Douro Valley, Portugal
Vintage: 2017
ABV%: 19.5%
Colour: Deep and opaque purple centre with a narrow scarlet outer rim.
Aromas: A complex and mature bouquet dominated by black fruit, cherry, plum and blackcurrant which surround notes of chocolate and liquorice. Delicate aromas of violets and touches of bergamot.
Flavours: On the palate this is a powerful wine, dense and with great volume. Silky tannins are well integrated with the highly concentrated fruit. A fresh and almost never-ending finish. An exceptional Vintage.

Founded in 1880 by Adriano Ramos Pinto, this Port House has always had a pioneering spirit – from the distinctive and stylish ‘art nouveau’ advertising from the 1900s to the continuing wide ranging vineyard research with results that have benefited the whole port trade. Champagne Louis Roederer, now the majority shareholder, perpetuates this philosophy and ensures continuity in a company renowned for wine-making excellence.

Ramos Pinto holds the largest proportion of vineyards in relation to its production, giving it a high degree of control over viticultural methods and harvest timing. The house tends 187 hectares of prime vineyards in the Alto Corgo and Douro Superior areas of the famed Douro region, the mountainous valley formed by the Douro River and its tributaries.

In the Douro region, the viticultural year of 2016-2017 was dry and from May onward there was no relevant precipitation. The bud burst happened almost a week earlier than the average and the whole cycle was very precocious. In 2017 the harvest in the two sub-regions where the Ramos Pinto Quintas are located started almost simultaneously and much earlier than average. Usually this happens with a significant time difference. The grapes were harvested in perfect conditions and yields were very low. The profile of the 2017 crop is ripe, rich and perfumed.

Winemakers Highlights

Crushed by foot in the winepress, the grape fermentation process lasts around four to five days. The fermentation is stopped by the addition of 20% spirit. Lastly, the wine is racked. It does not undergo any hot or cold treatment or filtration.
